Salomon Smith Barney Announces 4th Annual Take Your Parents to School Day® Program

New York - February 5, 2002-Salomon Smith Barney (SSB) today announced the 4th annual Take Your Parents to School Day, program to be held from February 26th through February 28th in 150 classrooms from schools in 15 states across the country. Supported by a financial education curriculum developed and provided by SSB, teachers, students, SSB Financial Consultants and many parents across the country will join in this comprehensive, three-day program focused on enhancing the financial literacy and fiscal responsibility of middle school students.

How the Program Works
The first and second days of the program are taught by the classroom teacher utilizing the formal curriculum and accompanying handout materials provided by SSB. On the third and final day of the program, an SSB Financial Consultant joins the class to help bring the financial markets to life for the students and introduce the National Stock Portfolio Contest. True to the program's name, parents are encouraged to participate on the final day to share the experience with their children, hopefully allowing for better dialogue between them on the financial concepts discussed.

"Understanding the dynamics of money and investing is an important lesson young investors can learn from their teachers and parents, and it's one they're likely to carry with them for a lifetime. It's never too early to begin a dialog on practical attitudes towards planning for your short and long-term goals," said Mindy S. Ross, Director of Target Marketing at SSB. "These early discussions will lay solid groundwork for young investors to achieve their life goals and successfully manage their own money."

The Curriculum and National Stock Portfolio Contest
The SSB Take Your Parents to School Day, curriculum components include:

  • Developing basic financial literacy
  • Setting both long and short-term goals
  • Understanding the difference between saving and investing
  • Discussing what securities are, why they are issued and how they are exchanged

The National Stock Portfolio Contest, introduced on day three, allows classroom teams to create a hypothetical portfolio consisting of five shares of stock selected from a list provided by SSB. The contest runs for 12 weeks, during which students from all participating schools can track their portfolio's performance online through the SSB Young Investors NetworkSM Web site at http://www.salomonsmithbarney.com/yin/home.htm.

The winning portfolio will reflect the largest increase in value over the 12-week contest period. Each student in the winning class will receive one share of Citigroup stock (recent closing stock price: $45.50).

Kids and Money at SSB - A Background
The Take Your Parents to School Day, program is part of a broader initiative at SSB focusing on the education of future investors. It was first introduced in 1998 at several schools in suburban Boston, Chicago and New York. It was then rolled out nationally in March 1999, and, based on positive feedback and valuable input from parents and teachers, the program now enters its fourth year.

To support the aim of this program and the firm's broader initiatives, SSB offers the Young Investors NetworkSM Web site, a special destination within the firm's public site, Salomon Smith Barney Access. Young Investors Network is dedicated to the younger market and introduces the concepts of setting financial goals, saving and investing. It encourages parents' participation with features like the future education cost calculator and links to more than 1,300 colleges and universities. And, following a recent re-design and re-launch in June 2001, Young Investors NetworkSM was named, "Best of the Web 2001," for a second year by Forbes magazine and "Best Brokerage Web Site" for outstanding achievement in Web site development, by The Web Marketing Association.

Salomon Smith Barney is committed to helping parents and their children navigate the economic challenges they face on the road to financial security. For more advice on how to better plan for their financial future, parents of young investors may request a free copy of Salomon Smith Barney's 16-page booklet, Parents Guide for the Young Investor, by calling their local Salomon Smith Barney branch.
