Salomon Smith Barney Puts Spotlight on Women's Health Issues

Hosts Luncheon Symposium to Celebrate the Firm's Pink Ribbon Sponsorship of the Komen National Race for the Cure®

Washington, D.C. - May 31, 2001
Women's health issues and related investment opportunities, along with advancements in breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and research, were the focus of a luncheon symposium sponsored by Salomon Smith Barney at The Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C today.

According to Salomon Smith Barney-sponsored research, breast cancer continues to be a major health concern among women investors. The survey revealed that the greatest health concern for more than one-third of women investors interviewed was breast cancer (35%), with heart disease as a distant second (16%). Confirming the power of the pocketbook, well over half of all women investors surveyed (57%) donate to charities and foundations dedicated to women's health causes.

The survey further revealed that, given the opportunity, women investors are more likely to support political candidates who focus on women's health issues. One-third of these women investors believe it is "extremely important" for political candidates they support to focus on women's health issues, with another 52% stating it is "somewhat important" to do so. One-quarter of these women said it was "extremely likely" they would vote for a political candidate based on that candidate's strong support for the women's health issues they consider important; another 53% said it was "somewhat likely" they would vote that way. The survey was taken among women who are considered active investors.

"The voice of women investors has a powerful and positive impact on both corporate policies and the laws that affect women's healthcare and research," said Barbara Yastine, Chief Financial Officer, Citigroup's Corporate & Investment Bank and co-host of today's luncheon. "By supporting organizations, such as the Komen Foundation and its National Race for the Cure®, Citigroup and Salomon Smith Barney hope to celebrate and bring attention to those who are making a difference in this important battle. By hosting this annual Women's Health Issues luncheon, we are bringing critical issues to the attention of other corporations, politicians, healthcare professionals and the public."

Hosted by Ms. Yastine and James Tighe, Executive Vice President and Chesapeake Bay Regional Director for Salomon Smith Barney, the luncheon included presentations by:

  • Sally A. Canfield, Counselor to the Secretary of Health & Human Services
  • Dr. Katherine Alley, Director of The Breast Center, Suburban Hospital Healthcare System Affiliated with Johns Hopkins Medicine
  • Michael S. Dey, President, American Home Products, Wyeth Women's Healthcare Business
  • Jason Kolbert, Vice President, Healthcare Equity Strategist, Salomon Smith Barney

The luncheon celebrated the Komen National Race for the Cure®, to be held in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, June 2. The Komen National Race for the Cure®, founded by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, is the largest five-kilometer (5K) run/walk in the world, and raises funds for and awareness of breast cancer education, research, screenings and treatment programs.

To underscore its commitment to women's health issues, Salomon Smith Barney has selected the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation as the beneficiary of its participation in the SmartMoney Challenge -- a year-long portfolio competition among three of the nations leading full service brokerage firms. SmartMoney magazine provided each firm with a $50,000 investment account to be managed by a leading investment professional within each firm. At the conclusion of the challenge, the gains of all three of the portfolios will be donated to the winning firm's selected charity.
