A Letter from Citigroup Chairman and CEO Sandy Weill

Dear Friends and Colleagues:
It was one year ago this week when terrorists attacked America and took thousands of innocent lives. The horror of that day will live with us forever, as will the memory of the six Citigroup employees who were lost in the attack.
Hardly a day has passed when I haven't thought about the senselessness of it all and the pain it inflicted on so many people. I'm sure you've had a similar experience. September 11 was so wrong, and I pray we will never again have to endure anything like it.
But tragedy can also bring out the best in us, and September 11 was no exception. I remember the hundreds of volunteers who staffed relief centers in downtown New York City to help the rescue workers at Ground Zero. I also remember the long lines of people - including many Citigroup employees - that stretched around Citigroup Center waiting for hours and hours to give blood.
Thanks to all of you, the Citigroup Relief Fund was able to raise more than $20 million to provide college scholarships for the children of those who died or were permanently disabled. Our first set of scholarships will be distributed this fall.
On September 11, 2002, Citigroup's businesses will mark the anniversary of last year's tragedy, each in its own way.
On September 12 last year, I wrote of my conviction that we would "move forward to a better and brighter day." I believe we have done that. But no matter how far we've come, we will never forget.
My best to you and your families.
Sincerely,
Sandy Weill
