Our Distinguished History


Founded in 1873 and 1892, respectively, the firms of Charles D. Barney and Edward B. Smith were among the earliest providers of securities information, research and transactions.

Merging in 1937, Smith Barney and Co. offered its clients a powerful, blue-chip investment capability able to provide timely information, advice and insightful asset management.

Today, Smith Barney Asset Management, a unit of Citigroup Asset Management, unites the distinguished history of Smith Barney with the unparalleled global reach of its parent, Citigroup.

 

 

 

1873

Charles D. Barney opens his brokerage firm.

1892

Edward B. Smith opens his investment banking firm.

1910

Arthur, Herbert and Percy Salomon start their own securities business.

1937 The firms of Barney and Smith merge to form Smith Barney & Co.
1964

Smith Barney Asset Management is established.

1976 Smith Barney & Co. acquires Harris, Upham & Co. and becames known as Smith
  Barney, Harris Upham & Co.
1987

Smith Barney, Harris Upham & Co. acquired by Primerica Corp.

Late1980s Hutton acquired by Shearson Lehman Brothers.
1993

Primerica Corp. acquires brokerage and asset management operations of Shearson

  Lehman Brothers, combines it with Smith Barney businesses to form Smith Barney
  Shearson.
1993

Travelers Corp. acquires Primerica Corp. to form Travelers Group Inc. Smith Barney

  Shearson becames a wholly owned subsidisry of Travelers Group Inc.
1994 Smith Barney Shearson changes name to Smith Barney
1997

Travelers Group acquires Salomon Inc. and combines it with Smith Barney Holdings

  Inc.
1998 Citicorp merged with Travelers Group Inc. to form Citigroup - the world's largest
  financial services company. Smith Barney Asset Management is part of Citigroup Asset
  Management, a member of Citigroup.
